For three years Arts & Ideas has been a product of Patrick Phillips’s prodigious imagination and curiosity, as much an artisanal work as the material it discovered, crafted, and published. A conversational courtship, then an introductory partnership in 2013, led eventually to the acquisition of A&I by The Martha’s Vineyard Times in time for the 2014 season. We couldn’t be more pleased, to have a chance to build on Patrick’s elegant and thoughtful presentation of important ideas about a creative community, and at the same time to expand The Times’s core of readers, contributors, and advertisers.

We want our A&I platform to broaden and deepen the audience for the Vineyard’s creative community and to support the Island’s creators themselves. This first issue of 2014 (there will be three altogether this year) is therefore both the beginning of Volume IV and a new undertaking. The collaboration of Jamie Stringfellow and Kate Feiffer as co-editors and Patrick as creative godfather and design director showcases works of imagination and adds context and accessibility. We hope you’ll feel that your time with each issue has been well spent.

Every so often, if you’re lucky, an opportunity comes along to do something new that matters. Founding Arts & Ideas was just that for me. Our community knows creativity matters, and three years ago A&I was a new way to share arts and
ideas here.

From our early talks to now, I‘ve seen Peter Oberfest’s commitment to our community’s creativity as well a his dedication to publishing a magazine that matters. As evidence, the new editorial team gets storytelling and knows magazines present great storytelling opportunities. But, most of all they posses the intuition and imagination to share our creative stories well. With them, both form and function sing.

I think you’ll like what you see and read in this new Arts & Ideas. I couldn’t be happier with its new team, and because of The Times know these pages will continue to matter; looks like another opportunity has come along . . .
